Study Phases
The research will occur in three major phases:
- Phase 1 Example Use Survey: designed to explore the scope of the ways in which participants explore various mathematical conjectures and make decisions whether the conjectures are true or false. Participants will include middle school students, high school students, and undergraduate mathematics majors (including pre-service secondary teachers).
- Phase 2 Example Use Interviews: designed to investigate participants’ uses of examples in developing, exploring, understanding, and proving conjectures. Participants will include middle school students, high school students, undergraduate mathematics majors (including pre-service secondary teachers), and mathematicians.
- Phase 3 Small-group Teaching Experiments: designed to foster students’ abilities to think about and use examples more strategically in support of learning to prove. Participants will include middle school students, high school students, and undergraduate mathematics majors (including pre-service secondary teachers).
